Béziers is a town in the south of France, not far from the Mediterranean coast. It has a population of around 76,000, and is famous for its historical heritage and its various locks, such as the one leading to the Canal du Midi and reaching our campsite in Vias. The town is home to many tourist attractions, including the Pont Vieux (Old Bridge) and the Cathedral ofSaint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse, which overlooks the entire Languedoc region. Gothic in style, it was built in the XIIIᵉ century on ancient Roman monuments, remnants of which are still present in the city. Discover a town of character in the heart of the Hérault region
The second largest city in the Hérault department, Béziers is located in the Biterrois region of Languedoc-Roussillon. It was built on the banks of the Orb River, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea, making it ideal for water-based activities such as boat trips and kayaking on the Canal du Midi.
Its geographical location, not far from Spain, has been a strategic point for many peoples throughout history. It has been home to various civilizations over the years. Béziers is an old town with a rich historical and cultural heritage.
Roman remains, such as the amphitheatre, were first discovered, before the town developed under Charlemagne in the Middle Ages. Major monuments were built and the wine trade flourished.
Today, the town of Béziers is a major tourist attraction, famous for its rugby team, its Spanish-influenced bullfighting shows and its vineyards. It’s also a region where the climate is pleasant at any time of year, and where modern and historic architecture, built at great heights, gives the place a great deal of charm. Getting to Béziers by sea
If the Canal du Midi is mainly associated with Béziers, it’s because the canal is a titanic work of art designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
The Canal du Midi is a unique waterway built between 1667 and 1681. One of the oldest canals in the world, it is also one of the longest man-made waterways in Europe (240 km). Its creation enabled goods to be transported rapidly between two seas, which helped trade enormously.
The Canal du Midi stretches towards the Mediterranean via Finca L’Air Marin, our campsite in Vias, and empties into theEtang de Thau near Sète. Take advantage of our strategic position to discover the best spots along the Canal du Midi, and explore the area around Béziers by sea or land.
You can also see the extent of the Canal’s construction site through the 9 locks at Fonseranes.
