Discover old Marseillan
Marseillan is surrounded by water, with lakes, marshes and beaches. The town center stands out from the coast, offering two totally distinct atmospheres. With its centuries-old traditional alleyways, Marseillan has all the hallmarks of a friendly southern village.
Here you’ll find many of the shops and restaurants typical of Languedoc-Roussillon seaside resorts. As you stroll through the historic center, you’ll notice the architecture of the old bourgeois houses, as well as thechurch of Saint Jean-Baptiste with its atypical square bell tower. One of Marseilles’ specialties is Noilly Prat vermouth, whose winery can be visited.
Marseillan plage: beaches and marina
Marseillan’s beaches stretch along the Mediterranean coast, following on from those of Cap d’Agde and Sète. There are 4 main beaches: Bagnas, Rieu, Honneur and Robinson. The first two are the ones furthest west of the port, more popular with local holidaymakers and closer to the naturist beaches of Cap d’Agde.
Close to the port, Plage d’Honneur is the liveliest, with several tourist facilities including restaurants and private beaches. Finally, at the eastern end of the seaside resort is Plage Robinson, a little wilder as you venture towards Sète.
The small marina at Marseillan plage links the Mediterranean Sea with the Etang de Thau. It’s the perfect place to enjoy water sports, take a boat trip or stroll along the quays and beaches.

Focus: Thau lagoon
a protected nature reserve
The Etang de Thau is a nature reserve located near the towns of Marseillan and Sète. It’s definitely a must-see if you’re looking for something to do near Sète. This lagoon was created between sea and land, and is an important natural habitat for many species. Covering an area of some 7,500 hectares, it is the largest body of water in Occitanie (formerly Languedoc Roussillon). The water in this area is rich in salt and algae, providing food for numerous species including seahorses, herons, egrets and ducks.
Together with the Bagnas nature reserve in the commune of Agde, these two wetlands contribute to the protection of flora and fauna. All around the Bassin de Thau, trails have been laid out to enable visitors to discover the species and landscapes by bike or on foot. It’s also an important area for oyster farming. You can sample these oysters near the ports of Mèze and Bouzigues, where this is the main activity. From Marseillan, guided boat tours are organized to navigate the freshwater.
