What to do in Agde?
Unlike the seaside resort of Cap d’Agde, which was developed in the 1970s, the town of Agde boasts a rich historical heritage dating back over 2,500 years.
In fact, you can still see 3 remnants of the ramparts and several gates, listed as Historic Monuments and bearing witness to the past of this ancient Greek city.
A visit to Agde gives you a better understanding of the town’s history. Thechurch of Saint-André, built in 506, is the town’s oldest church and has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1984.
The other outstanding religious building in Agde is the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, fortified in 1173 to protect the town. It’s built from basalt, the black volcanic stone you’ll see on many of the buildings in the historic center. This volcanic rock was formed by the eruption of Mont Saint-Loup (750,000 years BC).
This heritage is unique in the Languedoc region. A visit to the historic center of Agde takes you to the basalt quays, which are very lively during the summer season, when the famous joutes nautiques, a sport typical of the region, take place.
The quays are also the perfect place for a pleasant stroll along the river.

In a colorful, family-friendly atmosphere, stroll through the charming alleyways and visit the craft market on the seafront every day in summer.
